Clara Lee Brown receives Emerald Literati Award for Outstanding Paper

Clara Lee BrownCongratulations to Clara Lee Brown, Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE) associate professor of English as a Second Language (ESL) education, on receiving a prestigious 2020 Emerald Literati Award for Excellence! Professor Brown and her co-authors, Natalia Ward (East Tennessee State University) and Benjamin H. Nam (University of Tennessee, Knoxville) won the award for Outstanding Paper for their paper “Only English Counts”: the impact of English hegemony on South-Korean athletes.

Literati Awards for Outstanding Papers require the research to create impact, to generate real change beyond academia, and to have relevance to practice and further research.

The paper examined how English, as a de facto global lingua franca, functions as a powerful gatekeeper in the sports administration. Brown, Ward, and Nam, conducted a content analysis of semi-structured individual interviews and focus groups, conducted with thirty former South Korean elite athletes.

Well done Clara, Natalia and Benjamin on this fantastic recognition!
