The English as a Second Language education program at the University of Tennessee prepares candidates to teach students whose native language is other than English. They are certified to teach students in grades PreK through 12.
Candidates typically earn a B.A. in English, a world language, or linguistics from the College of Arts and Sciences, and complete a minor in ESL education. Then they complete the Professional Year – graduate coursework and a yearlong internship that leads to a master’s degree (Master of Science, English as a Second Language Professional Internship Concentration).
