Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) and Best Buddies at UTK (BB) are hosting events to spread the word to end the unacceptable use of the word “retarded.” The “R- word” demeans people who have diverse learning conditions and intellectual disabilities. Our choice of language frames our thinking, affects our attitudes, and influences our actions.
SCEC & BB will gather at the Humanities plaza to collect signatures from University of Tennessee, Knoxville students and faculty who will make the pledge to stop saying the “R” word and show respect for diversity on Wednesday March 6, 2019. Signers will take the pledge to stop using the R-word. Share your stories of your own R-word experiences with your friends and pledge to spread the new R-word- RESPECT.
