UT’s Instructional Technology master’s degree program prepares leaders in the field of instructional design and technology.
Coursework enables students to design, develop, implement, and evaluate online learning environments. These skills are desirable in a variety of contexts such as education, corporate, government, and nonprofit organizations.
To be successful in this fully online program, students need access to a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, webcam, USB headset with microphone, backup storage device, and software, as required by the course instructors.

We typically admit for summer and fall semesters. June 15 is the deadline for fall and April 15 is the deadline for summer. We will continue to review applications space permitting after the deadline.
We only admit in the spring semester when there are enough students to start a spring cohort. October 15 is the deadline for spring.
What jobs can I get with a degree in Instructional Technology?
Graduates in our field typically find jobs related to curricular design, technology coordination, distance education, instructional design, and training.
How long would it take me to complete your program?
Our courses are sequenced so that assuming students enroll in two courses per semester they are able to complete the 33-hour program in two years – including the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
Are there any other requirements other than coursework?
To complete our degree, students are required to complete a professional portfolio as a capstone experience and participate in a face-to-face meeting once a year in the summer.
What does the this program offer to me that other programs do not?
IT Online is an online program that takes advantage of both asynchronous and synchronous learning formats. Therefore, you will be expected to engage in course related activities from the convenience of your home and also have live connections with instructors and participants. This program is specifically focused for individuals interested in the development of online learning environments. The Instructional Technology program faculty have more than five years of experience teaching online and at least 80% of the program courses are taught by tenure-track faculty.

What are system requirements to be able to participate in the program?
What technology skills do I need to to be able to participate in the program?
Incoming students are required to be proficient in an operating system, Mac or Windows, that will run the university-supported online learning environments including Canvas and Zoom. Students are also expected to be proficient in productivity software such as Microsoft Office or Open Office. Many assignments in the program courses will require that you complete them using a word processor, spreadsheet, or presentation software. Finally, students are required to be proficient in electronic and internet communications. Once students are admitted to the program, all communications will take place through the university email system and students will have to familiarize themselves to it. Additionally, it is the student’s responsibility to have a high speed Internet connection set up from the location s/he will be engaging in course work.
After this master’s program if I choose to continue to a PhD program does UT have an Instructional Technology doctorate program?
Our department houses the Learning, Design, and Technology (LDT) doctoral program. This program is primarily face-to-face, but some of your master’s course work may transfer into your program of study. For more information check out the LDT program page.
