Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education

Teacher Education Concentration, Social Science Specialization

Doctoral programs include a major field or area of concentration and, frequently, one or more cognate fields. Cognate fields are defined as a minimum of 6 semester hours of graduate coursework in a given area outside the student’s major field. Three years prior teaching experience is required for admission to any PhD program of study. Students will plan, in concert with the advisor and committee, a program of studies suitable to their educational desires and needs for completion of the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Application Process

Individuals seeking admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education must first be admissible to the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and then admitted to a concentration within the PhD with a major in education. Prospective students are encouraged to make application at least six months before anticipated matriculation.
