Joy G. Bertling received her Ph.D. in art education from the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on the intersection of art education and ecological concerns and also explores the potential of image-based research methods. While she has published numerous articles, her research “The Art of Empathy: A Mixed Methods Case Study of a Place-Based Art Education Program” was recently published in the International Journal of Education & the Arts. Joy is also a National Board Certified Teacher. Prior to joining the faculty at the University Of Tennessee, Knoxville, she taught visual art in K-12 public schools for over a decade, primarily at the middle school level.
