Deborah A. Wooten is an associate professor of reading in the Theory and Practice in Teacher Education Department at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. Before joining the university faculty in 2002, she taught elementary school for 23 years. Her résumé includes experience in the rural schools of Mississippi and in the urban classrooms of New York City. After earning her PhD at New York University in New York City, she spent 10 years in the elementary classroom to research practical new methods of using children’s literature to foster connections across curriculum boundaries while scaffolding students to think metacognitively. Results are published in her book Valued Voices: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching and Learning.
Deborah is currently serving as a board member for the National Council of English’s Children’s Literature Assembly (CLA). She has served as co-chairperson and regional co-leader of International Reading Association’s (IRA) Children’s Choices as well as a committee member for the ILA Children’s and Young Adult’s Book Award and Paul A. Witty Short Story Award. Most recently, Deborah served on the United States Board on Books For Young People’s Outstanding International Book Honor List committee. She is an author and editor of numerous books, chapters, and articles, including co-editing and contributing to The Continuum Encyclopedia of Young Adult Literature and Children’s Literature in the Reading Program: Engaging Young Readers in the 21st Century.
