The secondary social science education program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville prepares candidates to teach social sciences (history, geography, economics, and political science) to student in grades 6-12. Candidates are prepared to work in diverse settings to effectively meet the individual learning needs of their students.
Path to Teaching Certification
Candidates earn a B.A. from the College of Arts & Sciences in the area of social sciences that they wish to teach, a minor from a second social sciences content area, and a minor in secondary education. They also complete one Geography elective. Then they complete the Professional Year – graduate coursework and a yearlong internship that leads to a master’s degree (Master of Science, Social Science Education Professional Internship Concentration).
