Nivedita Ganguly, PhD

Clinical Associate Professor, VolsTeach-Science Education


Nivedita (Nita) is the Master Teacher for Science for the VolsTeach Program in the Center for Enhancing Education in Mathematics and Sciences (CEEMS). Nita was the Chairperson of the Science Department at Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge, TN and taught Biology, Genetics Honors and AP Environmental Science.

She had worked previously  as a post-doctoral fellow and Research Scientist at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, University of California-Irvine and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During her tenure at Oak Ridge High School, she served as a Grader and Table Reader for AP Environmental Science and was also a member of the Test Development Committee.

She is presently member of the College Board Curriculum and Assessment Committee for Environmental Science and of the Lab Visions Committee for the Sciences that  are working on the Redesign of all AP Science Courses.

Nita is an endorsed College Board Consultant and conducts workshops and Summer Institutes at the national and international level in AP Environmental Science, AP Vertical Teams and the Learner Centered Classroom. She has also been designated a National Leader for the College Board and is on the committee that trains consultants. In addition, she has been a co author for both editions of the College Board AP Vertical Teams Guide for Science. Nita has been recognized for her contribution to science education by being awarded the Presidential Award for the teaching of Environmental Science and the Siemens Recognition Award for the teaching of AP Science.

Nita is originally from Kolkata, India and in the little spare time that she has, she enjoys gardening, reading and travelling. She is married to Dr. Ranjan Ganguly, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Their son, Tuhin, an intellectual property lawyer, and daughter-in-law, Kara, who works for a law firm, live in Washington, DC. Education : BS in Zoology, Masters in Genetics and Ph.D in Genetics from the University of Kolkata, India.   MS in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville,  Lyndhurst FellowDC.
